In colonial times the burials were made here, in front of the church. After the creation of the cemetery in 1838, it was left vacant until 1872, when the square was inaugurated. The central fountain was surmounted by a three- face clock which replaced the kiosk where the orchestra used to play during holidays and special occasions.
At present, every 14th of September the Patron Saint Festivities of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross are held here.
